Seven Centers of Power Within You
The chakra system is not mythology. It is a precise map of how the human nervous system, endocrine system, and consciousness relate to each other, from the most physical to the most spiritual.

The word "chakra" means wheel or vortex in Sanskrit, and in the yogic system, chakras are not metaphors. They are specific psycho-energetic centers located along the spine that correspond precisely to the major nerve plexuses and endocrine glands of the physical body. Each chakra represents a specific level of human consciousness, and together they form a complete map of human evolution, from the survival instincts of the root to the pure awareness of the crown.

When yoga teachers talk about "opening" a chakra, they are describing a specific physiological and psychological process: activating the nerve plexus, stimulating the associated endocrine gland, and unlocking the dimension of experience that chakra governs. The seven chakras, when understood and worked with through yoga, pranayama, and meditation, provide a complete curriculum for human transformation.

The anatomical correspondence: Each chakra corresponds to a major nerve plexus in the body. From base to crown: sacro-coccygeal plexus โ†’ sacral plexus โ†’ solar plexus โ†’ cardiac plexus โ†’ pharyngeal plexus โ†’ cavernous plexus โ†’ cerebral cortex. The convergence of yogic and anatomical mapping is one of the most fascinating bridges between ancient wisdom and modern science.

The Three Primary Nadis

Before exploring the seven chakras, it's essential to understand the three energy channels (nadis) through which prana flows between them:

๐ŸŒ€ Sushumna

The central spiritual channel running through the spinal cord. The path of Kundalini Shakti. Most people never access Sushumna, the goal of yoga is to balance Ida and Pingala so that energy enters this central channel.

๐ŸŒ™ Ida

The Moon channel. Flows from the left side of Moolaadhara to the left nostril. Governs mental energy, cooling, creativity, and parasympathetic nervous system. Associated with right-brain activity.

โ˜€๏ธ Pingala

The Sun channel. Flows from the right side of Moolaadhara to the right nostril. Governs physical energy, heating, logic, and sympathetic nervous system. Associated with left-brain activity.

The Seven Chakras: Complete Descriptions

1๐Ÿ”ด

Moolaadhara Chakra

Root Center, Mula = Root, Adhara = Support๐Ÿ“ Base of the spine / perineum

Physical Associations

LAM
  • Element: Prithvi (Earth)
  • Colour: Deep red
  • Petals: 4
  • Glands: Gonads (reproductive)
  • Seat of Kundalini Shakti

Yoga Practices to Activate

  • Ashwini Mudra, direct stimulation
  • Nasikagra Drishti, gaze to nose tip
  • Tadan Kriya, awakens dormant energy
  • Moola Bandha, root lock
  • Sitting practices that ground pelvic floor
The Moolaadhara is the seat of all that keeps us alive, survival, grounding, belonging to the earth. It is here that the immense potential of Kundalini Shakti lies dormant, coiled three and a half times, waiting to be awakened. Without this root being stable, no spiritual work is possible.
2๐ŸŸ

Swadhisthana Chakra

Sacral Center, Swa = Self, Adhisthana = Dwelling place๐Ÿ“ Sacrum / Lower abdomen

Physical Associations

VAM
  • Element: Apas (Water)
  • Colour: Orange
  • Petals: 6
  • Governs: Reproductive organs, kidneys
  • The unconscious mind and stored Samskaras

Psychological & Yoga Significance

  • Center of stored unconscious impressions
  • Governs pleasure, creativity, sexuality
  • Bhujangasana (cobra) activates this region
  • Butterfly pose for reproductive health
  • Imbalance: emotional instability, guilt
The Swadhisthana is the storehouse of the subconscious mind, all our desires, fears, and unprocessed experiences accumulate here. Yoga practices that work on the lower abdomen and reproductive region help to process and clear these stored impressions, freeing the practitioner from unconscious compulsive patterns.
3๐ŸŸก

Manipura Chakra

Solar Plexus, Mani = Jewel, Pura = City๐Ÿ“ Navel / Solar plexus

Physical Associations

RAM
  • Element: Tejas (Fire)
  • Colour: Yellow-gold
  • Petals: 10
  • Governs: Pancreas, adrenal glands, liver
  • Center of digestive fire (Jatharagni)

Significance for Health

  • Regulates metabolism and blood sugar
  • Primary target for diabetes yoga therapy
  • Uddiyana Bandha directly stimulates this
  • Navasana (Boat pose) strengthens Manipura
  • Balanced: strong will, healthy digestion
The Manipura is the "city of jewels", the center of personal power, digestive fire, and metabolic vitality. It is the primary reason why yoga is so effective for digestive health and blood sugar regulation: most of the asanas that compress the abdomen are directly activating this center, stimulating the pancreas, liver, and adrenal glands simultaneously.
4๐Ÿ’š

Anahata Chakra

Heart Center, Anahata = Unstruck๐Ÿ“ Centre of the chest / Cardiac plexus

Physical Associations

YAM
  • Element: Vayu (Air)
  • Colour: Green
  • Petals: 12
  • Governs: Heart, lungs, thymus gland
  • Bridge between physical and spiritual

The Windless Flame

  • Seat of the Jivatma (individual soul)
  • The Anahad Nad is heard here in deep meditation
  • Heart-centered meditation practice
  • Manages hypertension and asthma
  • Connection to universal love and compassion
The Anahata is the most significant chakra for most practitioners, the point at which the journey shifts from managing physical health to awakening spiritual potential. Its 12 petals represent the 12 qualities of the awakened heart: love, clarity, harmony, empathy, compassion, peace, unity, understanding, purity, devotion, forgiveness, and balance.
5๐Ÿ”ต

Vishuddhi Chakra

Throat Center, Vishuddha = Purification๐Ÿ“ Throat / Pharyngeal plexus

Physical Associations

HAM
  • Element: Akasha (Ether/Space)
  • Colour: Blue / Sky blue
  • Petals: 16, representing 16 Sanskrit vowels
  • Governs: Thyroid, parathyroid, vocal cords
  • Processes the "nectar of immortality" (Amrit)

Why 16 Petals Matter

  • Each petal = one Sanskrit vowel sound
  • Activated by mantra and Ujjayi pranayama
  • Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock) stimulates it
  • Sarvangasana massages thyroid region directly
  • Imbalance: thyroid dysfunction, communication issues
The Vishuddhi is the center of purification in both a physical and energetic sense. Physiologically, it is where the thyroid regulates the metabolic rate of every cell in the body. Spiritually, it is where the "nectar of immortality" dripping from the Bindu above is either consumed (in ignorance) or refined (in awareness), a metaphor for how we process all experience.
6๐Ÿ”ท

Ajna Chakra

Third Eye, Ajna = Command / To perceive๐Ÿ“ Between the eyebrows / Pineal gland

Physical Associations

OM
  • Element: Beyond elements (Mahat)
  • Colour: Indigo
  • Petals: 2
  • Governs: Pituitary gland, nervous system
  • Where Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna meet

The Command Center

  • Known as the "Guru Chakra", the inner teacher
  • Gateway between lower and higher consciousness
  • Shambhavi Mudra directly activates this center
  • Trataka (candle gazing) is its primary practice
  • Development: intuition, clairvoyance, wisdom
The Ajna is the command center, not of the physical body, but of the entire yoga practice. It is here that the practitioner learns to observe without reacting, to be aware without being absorbed. In the Ajna, the duality of Ida and Pingala, which has structured all of our experience until this point, finally dissolves into unified awareness.
7๐Ÿ’œ

Sahasrara

Crown Center, Sahasrara = Thousand-petalled๐Ÿ“ Crown of the skull

The Highest Center

โˆž
  • Not a chakra in the conventional sense, beyond all categories
  • Symbol: Thousand-petalled lotus
  • The "Tenth Door" (Brahmadoora) opening to pure spirit
  • Seat of highest consciousness
  • Where Jivatma unites with Paramatma

The Goal of All Yoga

  • The Kundalini's destination after rising through all 7 centers
  • Not "activated" by a specific practice, it opens when all others are balanced
  • Associated with experiences of unity, bliss, Samadhi
  • Beyond duality, beyond personal identity
  • The ultimate destination of yoga's inner journey
The Sahasrara is technically beyond the chakra system, it is the destination, not a waystation. When the Kundalini Shakti finally rises from the Moolaadhara through all chakras via the Sushumna and reaches the Sahasrara, the individual soul (Jivatma) unites with the Supreme Soul (Paramatma). This is the ultimate purpose of all yoga: not better flexibility or lower blood pressure, but liberation.

Using This Guide in Practice

The chakra system is most useful not as esoteric theory but as a practical diagnostic and prescriptive tool. When you understand that a specific physical issue (thyroid, digestion, heart health) corresponds to a specific chakra (Vishuddhi, Manipura, Anahata), you can apply the corresponding yoga practices with much greater precision and intention.

Combine this understanding with the clinical nutrition approach at DietSeFit, recognising that each chakra's associated gland and organ system has specific nutritional requirements, and you have a genuinely integrated approach to health that operates at every level simultaneously.

Align Your Energy System with Clinical Nutrition

Each chakra's associated endocrine gland has specific nutritional needs. From iodine for the Vishuddhi to chromium for the Manipura, our dietitians create plans that nourish your energy system from the inside out.
