Understanding Your Results

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)

Calories your body burns at complete rest. This is the minimum energy needed for basic functions.

Maintenance Calories

Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Eating this amount maintains your current weight.

Target Calories

Adjusted calories based on your goal. A 500 kcal deficit/surplus leads to ~0.5 kg change per week.

Note: These are estimates. Individual factors like metabolism, hormones, and body composition affect actual needs.

How Our Calorie Calculator Works

Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the gold standard recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). It's been shown in clinical research to be the most accurate predictive equation for everyday adults across age groups, body sizes, and ethnicities, including Indian populations.

The equation accounts for your age, gender, height, weight, and activity level to calculate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), the total calories your body burns in a day, including basic metabolism, daily movement, and exercise. This is the maintenance number that keeps your weight stable.

For weight loss, we recommend a deficit of 500-750 calories below your TDEE, enough to lose 0.5-0.75 kg per week sustainably without triggering the metabolic slowdown that ruins crash diets. For weight gain, a surplus of 300-500 calories promotes lean muscle gain without excessive fat accumulation. Aggressive surpluses simply add fat, not muscle.

Understanding Your Daily Calorie Needs

ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) provides reference daily caloric intake ranges for the Indian population:

  • Sedentary Indian woman1,900 kcal/day
  • Moderately active Indian woman2,100 kcal/day
  • Sedentary Indian man2,300 kcal/day
  • Moderately active Indian man2,500 kcal/day
  • Active / athletic individuals2,800, 3,200 kcal/day

Note: These are maintenance ranges. Weight loss requires 500-750 below maintenance. Weight gain requires 300-500 above.

Common Calorie Counting Mistakes

Not counting cooking oil

1 tbsp oil = 120 calories. Most Indian cooking uses 2-4 tbsp per meal, adding 240-480 invisible calories daily that never make it into your tracking app.

Ignoring chai/coffee calories

2 cups of chai with sugar and milk = 120-160 calories/day that most people forget to count. Over a year, that's enough to add 5-7 kg.

Underestimating rice portions

1 cup cooked rice = 200 calories. Most Indians serve 1.5-2 cups, making it 300-400 calories per serving, almost double what most people estimate.

Not adjusting for weekends

Social eating on weekends can add 500-1000 extra calories that completely undo a week of weekday discipline. Plan ahead for events.
